Video, holography, laser and electronic art

Nam June Paik, TV Cello

Wen Ying Tsai, Fountain

Almost as soon as hand-held video cameras came onto the market, artists started experimenting with them. Holography, lasers and electronic art quickly followed. Nam June Paik was the first artist to work with video, using the technology in ways its inventors could never have imagined, including making them double as musical instruments and submerging them in water.

Bill Viola continues to produce his large-scale, beautiful and highly polished pieces, for instance Five Angels. Artists such as Rockne Krebs, Dani Karavan and Wen Ying Tsai (laser), Philippe Boissonnet (holography) and Willian Latham (electronic art) are also continually expanding their knowledge, pushing the technology to greater artistic achievements.
