Tethys
(oil on board, 2001-2011)

Tethys was one of the Titans - daughter of Uranus and Gaia, sister and wife of Oceanus. She was a sea goddess, and was described as 'the mother', the embodiment of the waters of the world (which makes her a primordial Deva).

The Sorceror
(oil on canvas, 2011)

This piece has had a long genesis: begun probably before I started my degree (i.e. around 1997) - the tree and the Sorceror (lower left hand) came first, and for a long time that was all. Finally a year or two ago I got the painting out of the cupboard and sfinally finished it ... I have no idea what it's about, though.

Woman Clothed with the Sun
(oil on canvas, 2011)

And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars...
(Book of Revelation 12: 1-18)

Shemyaza
(oil on ply, 2011)

Shemyaza, leader of the fallen angels, fell in love with a mortal woman, Ishtahar. When she persuaded him to tell her the names of God, he was imprisoned - some say upside down - in the constellation of Orion for the duration.

Harmonics
(oil on canvas, 2011)

Painted for my 94-year-old mother, who had a stroke in February. (She recovered).

SwanSong
(acrylic on paper, 2006)

Again, based on myth, this time Celtic myth, of brothers changed into swans. Their sister avoided the spell and spent years weaving shirts for them, to try to break the spell. In the end she was successful, though the sleeve on the last shirt was never completed, and that brother retained his swan's wing...

Cilla sees herself as an alchemic artist, whose works is underpinned by the idea of parallel realities, invisible energies, and transformation through awareness. Born in Holland and brought up in Zimbabwe, she studied Graphic Art at Natal Technical College in Durban (South Africa), but found her true path only when she came to Britain and began to paint a deck of tarot cards in 1973. This showed her the OtherWorld, a parallel dimension to our own, where energies surge and dance, and things seem deeper and more true than in our superficial materialist image of the world. This is a universe we catch a glimpse of in reflections, or in dreams. Plato called this the world of Ideas, Jung called it the collective unconscious.

After painting her tarot deck (The Intuitive Tarot, published by St Martin's Press and Connections Publishing in October 2004), Cilla began painting large oils, starting with Night Dancers in 1987. The figures in these images seemed immensely powerful, and taught her much as she worked - about them, about herself, and the Otherworld itself. Between 1997 and 2001 she did a degree in Fine Art, where she learned about the incredible work being down in light and land, video, and installation. While this work still excites her, she has currently returned to her painting, and in addition to her large intuitive oils, is working in egg tempera on hide (see the home page and her creative blog).

Cilla now works as an artist, workshop facilitator, and psychospiritual counsellor using The Intuitive Tarot and her new set of cards, the Devas of Creation.
